Michelle A. Cragel-Thomas ’03 and her husband, Jonathan Thomas, welcomed their first son, Colin Thomas, on April 1, 2014.
Mike Brickner ’04, senior policy director for the Ohio chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, was the keynote speaker at Van Wert (Ohio) County Democrats’ annual Fall Banquet on Oct. 7, 2014. In 2013 he co-authored two reports that focused on the connection between poverty and the criminal justice system, and he is nationally recognized for his work on prison privatization. In 2014, he was part of a core team that is fighting the Republican Party’s efforts to restrict voting rights in Ohio. He has presented testimony at the Ohio General Assembly, has acted as spokesperson to the media, and has assisted in litigation against Ohio officials to restore evening, weekend, and Golden Week early voting opportunities.
Rori (Preston) Leath ’04 is Newark, Ohio’s The Works museum STEM director. The Works is an official affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and a member of the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC). As director, Leath focuses on teaching young students – and teaching teachers how to teach – about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). She hopes eventually to have just as many girls as boys sign up for the Works’ STEM programs, her focus being not on discouraging boys but encouraging girls and showing them there is a place for them in STEM. Marjorie Ulyan ’04 participated in Miami University’s Earth Expeditions global field course in Baja (http://www.earthexpeditions.org) over the summer of 2014.
William Scott Niehus ’05 has become Chardon, Ohio’s eighth chief of police. He has been with the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office since 1987, most recently as law enforcement division commander with the rank of lieutenant.
Christopher McVicker ’06 married Aimee Ray on May 3, 2014, at Thorncreek Winery in Aurora, Ohio. He works in the banking industry with Fifth Third Bank in Bainbridge; the couple resides in Southington, Ohio.
Sarah Schoenhagen ’09 has assumed the role of head volleyball coach at Beachwood High School in Beachwood, Ohio. A behavior specialist at Beachwood Middle School, Schoenhagen has for the prior two seasons coached the middle school program.
Rachel (Floriano) Smith ’09 married Matthew Smith in a beautiful ceremony at Patterson’s Fruit Farm on June 1, 2014.
