Last year we broke our all-time attendance record with over 900 Alumni Weekend participants. With your help, we can break that record again!
I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your support for Hiram College and for me over these last 11 years. It’s just a matter of days now until June 30 and my transition from college president to something new, exciting … and yet to be determined.
This is a long-planned transition. My successor, Lori Varlotta, Ph.D., comes to Hiram with a distinguished record of achievement at several institutions of higher learning. One of the great strengths she brings to Hiram is that she was educated in the liberal arts. A native of Western Pennsylvania, Dr. Varlotta is truly one of us. I like her very much. I know you will, too, and that you will support her enthusiastically and generously.
Through the years, I have told many people I never wanted to hold any job longer than five years. I was always open to the next great challenge. I broke my own rule and stayed at Hiram for 11 years. Why? Because there is truly something very special that binds people to Hiram Hill. It’s both intellectual and emotional. Like you, I discovered that gift. I have participated in hundreds of Hiram alumni events over the last decade, and the passion our graduates feel for their alma mater has been a constant source of inspiration. May that continue forever.
I have one final favor I would like to ask of you: Please be a vocal advocate for the value of a liberal arts education, particularly a Hiram liberal arts education. America needs more people who have learned to move beyond their comfort zones, who are smart, educated, disciplined and committed to making the world a better place. That’s precisely what a Hiram liberal arts education prepares its graduates to do. As an alumnus, you know this firsthand.
I leave the presidency of Hiram College deeply honored to have had the opportunity to serve, and hopefully to have made a difference for some very special young people. Again, thank you very much.
