The Hiram College women’s basketball team opened the 2014-15 season in an emotional and inspirational contest against Mount Saint Joseph.
Though the Terriers fell 66-55, everyone involved in the game was deemed a winner.
The game, originally scheduled to be played at Hiram on Nov. 15, was moved to Sunday to fulfill the wish of Mount Saint Joseph freshman Lauren Hill’s dream to play in her first collegiate game. Hill was diagnosed with a inoperable form of cancer.
The Lions won the opening tipoff and ran their “layup for Lauren” play. Hill received the ball in the post and scored a layup for her first collegiate points. She also scored the final basket of the game, finishing with four points in the contest.
Senior Kelsey Koskinen (Madison) led the Terriers with a game-high 23 points. She also had five rebounds and two assists.
Sophomore Kayla Yost(Norwalk/Perkins) added 10 points and eight rebounds for Hiram.
The Lions jumped out to a early 8-0 lead. But the Terriers would come right back with a 13-5 run, to knot the game up at 13-13.
Mount Saint Joseph would respond and build a 24-18 lead.
Two free throws by senior Taylor Ratliff (Berea/Columbia), with one second left in the first half, cut the Lions lead to 28-25 at the break.
A 3-pointer by Koskinen, with 12:19 left in the game, gave the Terriers their first lead, 39-37.
The teams would continue to trade the lead before the Lions reeled off a 11-0 run to build a 62-50 lead and put the game away.
The Terriers finished the game shooting 22-of-71 (31.0 percent) from the field, while Mount Saint Joseph was 22-of-59 (37.3 percent) in shooting.
Hiram College was honored to participate in such a special game. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lauren, her family and the Mount Saint Joseph community.
