In December, 2013, Hiram College President Tom Chema was appointed to a bi-partisan task force on Government Regulation of Higher Education by the United States Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. The group is charged with examining the burden of federal regulations and reporting requirements on institutions of higher learning. Co-chairs of the task force will be Nicholas Zeppos, Chancellor of Vanderbilt University and Chancellor William Kirwin of the University System of Maryland.
“Our higher education system remains the best in the world and is often credited for its breadth of choice and commitment to institutional autonomy,” said United States Senator Lamar Alexander in the letter of appointment. “Over the past decade, however, Congress and the U.S. Department of Education have added more mandates, reporting requirements and regulations with which institutions must comply. The Task Force creates an opportunity to conduct a comprehensive review of federal regulations and reporting requirements affecting colleges and universities and make recommendations to Congress and the Administration to streamline and reduce federal regulations, while at the same time maintaining student and taxpayer protections.”
Chema has served in leadership roles nationally within several higher education associations including the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, the Council of Independent Colleges and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
