The guidelines provided below are meant to help you determine if your existing computer will work adequately on the Hiram College campus’s network. If you have any particular questions, feel free to call the Help Desk at (330) 569-5313. Our hours Monday thru Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm. Our Summer hours are Monday thru Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm.
Operating Systems that are Supported:
These are a few of the latest Operating Systems available. All campus computers feature Windows 7 with Microsoft Office installed. We don’t have any computers that feature Windows 8 or Windows 10. Any student running on an older operating system is able to purchase Windows 7 through our Hiram Bookstore at a discounted price.
Microsoft Windows XP Home and Pro still work well on Hiram College’s network, but are not recommended for use on campus since as of April 8, 2014, Microsoft has stopped technical and security support for the Operating System.
There are two different versions of each operating system: 64-bit and 32-bit. Make sure to understand the value and issues each one may have. 64-bit Windows is able to handle larger amounts of memory more effectively than a 32-bit Operating System. A 64-bit OS may need to have a specific printer if a personal printer is purchased. The OS can use programs that were not designed for 64-bit computing, but anti-virus software may have compatibility issues. A 32-bit computer is capable of only using 32-bit programs, but it does not need any special printers or devices.
Caution: Students wishing to use other Operating Systems, such as any Macintosh OS or a type of Linux are permitted to do so. However, please be aware that there is currently not as much support provided for non-Windows Operating Systems.
Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows 98, Windows 95, and Windows ME are NOT supported nor allowed to be on the Hiram College Network.
All campus lab computers come with Microsoft Office Professional 2013 (Word, Excel, Access, and Power Point.) If you’d like to download the current version of office, each student is able to download it for free. The documentation for this download is provided below.
Any browser will be sufficient for most of your work. However, some campus web pages have been optimized for viewing in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. Internet Explorer should be included in all versions of Windows.
A version of an anti-virus product that automatically updates virus definitions is required for all students living on-campus. Microsoft Security Essentials is a free anti-virus product that our network supports. On Windows 8 machines, this is Windows Defender. In order to activate, you must remove all other anti-virus software that came pre-installed.
