Political science closely examines the processes, principles, and structure of government and political institutions.

The department is divided into four sub-fields: American Politics, Comparative Politics, International Politics and Political Philosophy. Political science students can benefit from the Garfield Institute for Public Leadership, which helps students develop expertise in foreign and domestic public policy, so that they are ready for leadership positions with corporate, government, and non-profit organizations.

The department strongly encourages students to participate in off-campus internships, commonly at government offices, non-profit organizations, research institutions and law firms. Every year a number of students serve as interns on Capitol Hill, in the offices of Senators and Congressional Representatives. After graduating, alumni have pursued careers in the fields of government, education and law.
